What is Euflexxa?
Euflexxa is an orthopedic injectable implant that is designed and manufactured by Ferring Pharmaceuticals, an American-based company. This sterile, biodegradable, and highly viscoelastic viscosupplement is made of the following ingredients:
- 10mg/mL sodium hyaluronate
- 8.5mg/mL sodium chloride
- 0.56mg/mL disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate
- 0.05mg/mL sodium dihydrogen phosphate dehydrate
- Water for injection
The hyaluronic acid molecules are extracted biotechnologically from fermented bacterial cultures and are then purified carefully to be free from any potentially harmful contaminants. Each box of Euflexxa comes with 3 prefilled 2mL syringes and a product information pamphlet.
What are the indications for treatment using Euflexxa?
The high viscoelasticity property of this intraarticular implant makes it ideal for managing osteoarthritis of the knee. Osteoarthritis is a debilitating degenerative condition of the synovial joints. Under normal circumstances, a healthy synovial joint has a layer of articular cartilage. This cartilage continuously excretes lubricating synovial fluid, so as to ensure that the bones glide over each other smoothly. The synovial fluid also helps to absorb shock during sudden movements. Unfortunately, years of wear-and-tear lead to the gradual break down of the cartilage, and the diminished production of synovial fluid. Patients suffer from painful symptoms of osteoarthritis such as stiffness and swelling. If left untreated, osteoarthritis will severely reduce mobility and quality of life.
How will Euflexxa injections help with osteoarthritis of the knees?
Following intraarticular administration of the Euflexxa viscosupplement, the gel will replicate the actions of the synovial fluid by lubricating the joints for smoother movements. The filler gel will also protect the joints from sudden shocks. Most importantly, Euflexxa may aid in stimulating the joints to produce more hyaluronic acid—an important component of the synovial fluid—for better lubricating and cushioning effects.
How is Euflexxa injected into the knees?
Prior to the treatment session, certified physicians must assess the patient’s medical information to determine their suitability for hyaluronic acid-based injections. Not only that, patients must also be informed of the potential side effects and risks of the procedure. Once they are ready, physicians should commence the treatment session by sanitising the injection sites and removing any joint effusion. The orthopaedic implant can then be injected into the synovial space of the affected knee(s). For best results, a total of 3 injections should be given to patients over the course of 3 weeks. A complete treatment course will provide pain-relief for up to 6 months.
