What is Juvederm Ultra XC?
Juvederm Ultra XC is a hyaluronic acid-based soft tissue filler that is formulated and produced by a globally famous pharmaceutical company, Allergan. The non-permanent hyaluronic acid molecules are extracted from a bacterial fermentation process conducted under a strict laboratory setting. The molecules are also purified extensively to be free from any bacterial endotoxins and/or contaminants that could potentially induce immunogenic reactions in patients. Following the cross-linking process using the chemical reticulating agent, 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE), the biodegradable filler material is integrated with rapid-acting lidocaine for reduced pain and discomfort during an aesthetic procedure. The resulting viscoelastic and bioresorbable gel contains 24mg/mL of reticulated hyaluronic acid and 0.3% of lidocaine. Each box comes with 2-1mL graduated syringes preloaded with the filler gel, 4 single-use 30G½” needles, and a product information pamphlet. This medical device is also marketed as Juvederm Ultra 2 in some countries.
What is Juvederm Ultra XC used for?
Due to its high concentration of hyaluronic acid and excellent viscoelasticity properties, this soft tissue filler is ideal for correcting medium facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Patients looking for fuller, more sensuous lips without the long recovery time of plastic surgeries can instead opt for non-surgical lip augmentation procedure done using this very same aesthetic implant. Certified and skilled specialists are advised to administer the filler into the mid-dermis layer of the skin to treat facial lines. If the injectable gel is used to volumise and shape the lips, then they should inject the filler material into the lip mucosal layer.
How long does this filler last?
Following intradermal implantation, Juvederm Ultra XC is able to deliver cosmetic corrections for about 9 to 12 months. This long residence time is made possible due to the densely cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel texture. That being said, this completely biodegradable implant will be gradually metabolised into the neighbouring tissues and the initial improvements will eventually wear off. The time taken for the gel to disintegrate varies depending on the patient’s age, skin health, and lifestyle behaviours. Patients can opt for more touch-up filler injections once the initial enhancements fade.
