What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a completely synthetic and bioresorbable soft tissue filler that is made of approximately 70% uniformly-shaped calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) micro particles suspended in a 30% gel carrier. The water-based gel carrier is, in turn, composed of smooth aqueous carboxymethylcellulose, glycerin and high purity water. The pyrogen-free and latex-free filler is designed and manufactured by Merz Aesthetics.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a brand of injectable implants and skincare products that are composed of cross-linked non-animal stabilised hyaluronic acid (NASHA). The hyaluronic acid molecules are harvested via tightly regulated bacterial fermentation process; the molecules are then extracted and extensively purified before they are stabilised and cross-linked into soft tissue fillers of varying texture and strengths. Restylane is a product of Q-Med, which is a subsidiary of Galderma.
Similarities and differences between Radiesse vs Restylane
Both Radiesse and Restylane fillers are designed to correct augment and correct aesthetic imperfections such as wrinkles, sunken facial areas, and ill-defined facial contours. Both these brands are meant to be injected intradermally; the depth of injections and the appropriate injection techniques greatly depend on the severity of cosmetic issues at hand. Besides that, both dermal fillers can be used to correct dermal deformities in patients who are allergic to animal-based aesthetic fillers as they are completely synthetic and free from any animal proteins. Most importantly, both of them are completely biodegradable and will be metabolised into the neighbouring tissues gradually.
The major difference between Radiesse and Restylane lies in their mechanism of action. The former is well-known for its potent biostimulating property. Once injected intradermally into the problematic areas, the aqueous gel carrier instantly volumises the deep-set wrinkles and hollowed out facial area. As well, the administration of CaHA microspheres will stimulate the fibroblasts—collagen production centres—to synthesise healthier and stronger collagen fibres. Over time, the injected Radiesse filler will be metabolised into the surrounding tissues. As for Restylane, the hyaluronic acid gel will instantly plump and correct the aesthetic issues it is indicated for. Besides the mode of action, these 2 brands of fillers can be differentiated based on their duration of action. Radiesse is renowned for its durability and is proven to last for up to a year or more before its eventual disintegration. As for Restylane, most of the fillers in the collection last for up to 9 months or more. However, the permanence of both these brands varies on an individual basis and the amount of filler injected. Not only that, patients who are unhappy with the outcomes of Restylane fillers can get them prematurely dissolved using hyaluronidase but the same cannot be done for Radiesse implants.
