What is the Difference Between Restylane vs Botox?

Restylane and Botox are 2 popular injectable anti-ageing products. They both provide correction to eliminate deep wrinkles, folds, and facial imperfections; however, the similarities stop there. Both injectables are made of unique ingredients and have different modes of action.   

Active ingredients

Restylane is a highly regarded dermal filler that delivers a sterile, viscoelastic, and bioresorbable hyaluronic acid-based gel into the mid to deep dermis. It functions as a hydrating, volumizing, and firming treatment for ageing skin. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body but depletes with time and age. For Restylane, it is extracted through the biofermentation of Streptococcus bacteria and further enhanced to create a cross-linked Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA).

The main benefit of hyaluronic acid is its capacity to fill the dermal extracellular matrix with moisture. Its humectant properties allow it to attract and retain moisture up to 1,000 times its own weight. By this, it increases the plumpness of the skin with an almost natural-like ingredient.

Botox, however, contains botulinum toxin produced from Clostridium botulinumand acts on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Instead of targeting soft tissues, it blocks the cholinergic reaction to prevent muscle contractions. As the muscles relax, the skin expands to form a smooth complexion. It stretches out folds and marks that are caused by overworked muscles.


For Restylane, the gel corrects moderate to severe wrinkles near the mid-face area, such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and even lip enhancement. The gel is injected intradermally into soft tissues of the face, neck, back of hands, and the submucosa of the lips. The result can last up to 6 months or more.  

On the other hand, Botox targets specific areas that corresponds with muscle contractions via intramuscular injection. These areas include prominent glabellar lines, between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet lines at the corner of the eyes. It requires 5 specific injections directly to corrugator muscles and procerus muscle to address forehead lines. The effect lasts up to 4 months and can be prolonged with maintenance treatments.
