How to Use Sculptra Injections for Buttocks Lift

What is Sculptra?

It is an injectable filler powder that is designed and manufactured by Sanofi Aventis, a French multinational pharmaceutical company. This implant is made of a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) compound, which is a non-toxic, semi-permanent, and completely synthetic polymer that is renowned for its efficiency and tissue-friendly properties. PLLA is used in various biomedical applications such as suture material, soft-tissue implants, bone plates, and even drug delivery systems. Once implanted in the problematic areas, this biostimulating polymer helps to encourage the production of new and healthy collagen fibres. Sculptra comes as freeze-dried micro particles of poly-L-lactic acid (150 mg), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (90 mg), and mannitol (127.5 mg), which must be reconstituted into a sterile, non-pyrogenic suspension with 5mL of sterile water prior to injecting into areas of concern.

What are the indications for treatment using Sculptra?

This dermal filler has been approved for use for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy (facial fat loss) caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections. It is also ideal for plumping shallow to deep-set facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Besides these 2 aesthetic imperfections, Sculptra is often used off-label to seamlessly augment the shape and size of a patient’s buttocks. While the traditional Brazilian butt lifting procedure involves removing fat tissue from other parts of the body before transferring it to the buttocks, Sculptra butt lifts only involves injecting the reconstituted Sculptra suspension into the shapeless buttocks. Since it does not require any fat grafts, the buttocks augmentation procedure using Sculptra can be done quickly with very minimal recovery time.

How is Sculptra injected to lift buttocks?

Though Sculptra does not require any allergy tests prior to intradermal injection, patients’ medical history must still be extensively reviewed to ascertain their suitability. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to any of the ingredients present in Sculptra, or who have a tendency to develop hypertrophic scars are contraindicated from receiving Sculptra injections. Once the injection suspension has been prepared, medical specialists can slowly administer it into the sanitised and anaesthetised area of the buttocks just beneath the skin at the subcutaneous layer. Some patients might need to undergo up to 4 treatment sessions for adequate contouring of the buttocks. Unlike Brazilian butt lifts, there is very minimal downtime and fewer restrictions. The desirable effects should last for about 2 to 3 years depending on patients’ skin condition, health status, age, and lifestyle options, as well as the amount of Sculptra injected into the buttocks.
