DEPO-PROVERA® - About and Key Features
DEPO-PROVERA® is an injectable contraceptive containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic form of progesterone. It prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining. Each injection provides three months of contraceptive protection. Additionally, DEPO-PROVERA® is used to treat endometriosis and certain types of cancer, including breast, kidney, and endometrial cancer. While effective, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and its prolonged use can lead to bone density reduction.
Key Features:
- Highly Effective Contraceptive – 99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy with one injection every three months.
- Additional Medical Uses – Treats endometriosis and hormone-sensitive cancers.
- Long-Term Effects – May reduce bone density, requiring monitoring for osteoporosis risk.
