What is Monovisc?

Monovisc is a single-treatment orthopedic implant that is made of highly viscoelastic and non-animal hyaluronic acid. This is a product of Anika Therapeutics, an American pharmaceutical company that is renowned worldwide for their revolutionary hyaluronic acid-based products. Each box of Monovisc is supplied with a single 4mL syringe preloaded with 22mg/mL of cross-linked sodium hyaluronate injectable gel, some patient record labels for traceability, and package insert. The intraarticular implant had been processed to resemble closely the physical properties and actions of the synovial fluid in the synovial joints. It is then used to alleviate painful and uncomfortable symptoms associated with osteoarthritis like stiffness, and pain.

What is Orthovisc?

Also designed by Anika Therapeutics, Orthovisc is a viscous and sterile mixture that is formulated using animal-based highly-purified hyaluronan. A box of Orthovisc is packaged with a single 2mL syringe that is pre-filled with 15mg/mL of sodium hyaluronate gel, some patient traceability labels, and product information pamphlet. This viscosupplement is designed to share the same physiology and function as the synovial fluid. Once injected into the synovial cavity of osteoarthritic synovial joints, debilitating symptoms like friction and stiffness can be alleviated. Orthovisc and Monovisc side effects should be taken into consideration as well.

What are the differences between Monovisc Vs Orthovisc?

Monovisc and Orthovisc are differentiated based on the origin of the active components. The hyaluronic acid molecules in Monovisc are extracted and purified from bacterial fermentation and are free from any animal proteins. Hence, it is very suitable for osteoarthritic patients who are diagnosed with hypersensitivity to avian-based products. Orthovisc, on the other hand, has its hyaluronic acid particles sourced from rooster combs. Besides the origin of the hyaluronic acid molecules, these two intra-articular implants have different administration technique. Due to its high hyaluronic acid strength, Monovisc is only required to be injected once while Orthovisc is meant to be administered three to four times, spaced one week apart for adequate correction.
