WHAT IS SURGIDERM?
Surgiderm is a range of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers formulated using a specialized cross-linking process known as 3D Hyaluronic Acid Matrix Technology. This advanced manufacturing process ensures that results are long-lasting and durable. There are 2 versions of fillers available in this line:
- Surgiderm 24XP: This filler is made of 24mg/mL of hyaluronic acid. Each box comes with 2 prefilled 0.8mL syringes, 2 sterile and disposable 30G½” needles, a set of patient record labels to ensure traceability, and a package insert.
- Surgiderm 30XP: This filler is also made of 24mg/mL of hyaluronic acid. Each box comes with 2 prefilled 0.8mL syringes, 2 sterile and disposable 27G½” needles, a set of patient record labels to ensure traceability, and a package insert.
The fillers are packaged under sterile conditions and must be stored in a clean and cool room with a temperature ranging from 2ºC and 25ºC.
WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Hyaluronic acid-based soft tissue fillers are a renowned aesthetic solution to correct skin marred by imperfections such as wrinkles and folds.
- Surgiderm 24XP: This filler is used to correct medium to deep lines and wrinkles, especially around the eye, mouth, chin, and cheek areas.
- Surgiderm 30XP: This filler is used to enhance healthy-looking volume in hollowed regions. Additionally, mid to deep facial creases like nasolabial folds and marionette lines can be effectively correctly using this filler.
Both versions of the fillers can also be used as a lip volumiser for added definition and shape in the lips.
HOW DOES THIS DERMAL FILLER WORK?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and performs many important functions to maintain the health and stability of the body. There are many important functions within the skin cell, but 2 elements that have a huge effect on the outward appearance of the skin are collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen fibres are responsible for forming the firm-yet-elastic texture of skin, while hyaluronic acid maintains the hydration level of skin. When the cells are functioning normally, skin is supple and well-moisturised. However, skin is prone to forming creases and wrinkles as time passes. Biological ageing causes the quantity and quality of dermal cells to deteriorate. As a result, new cell turnover happens at a slower pace and cellular damage is not repaired efficiently. Wrinkles and lines are particularly prone to forming in areas where most facial expressions take place, such as around the eyes and the mouth. These skin creases are usually exacerbated by external skin-ageing factors, like chronic sun exposure, smoking, and pollution. These influencers introduce free radicals (highly reactive toxins), which injure the already weakened skin. If left untreated, wrinkles and lines become more noticeable, making the skin appear more aged. In some cases, patients may experience unintended weight loss, especially the loss of facial fats, as a result of ageing as well. This loss of volume can manifest most noticeably in the appearance of sunken cheeks and temples, which can make patients look lethargic and unhealthy.
Surgiderm is used to seamlessly repair these age-related skin depressions. Its main active ingredient— cross-linked non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid—has been formulated to closely mimic naturally occurring hyaluronic acid found in healthy young skin cells. Once injected, the gel immediately fills and lifts wrinkles, resulting in smoother and plumper skin. Additionally, the synthetic hyaluronic acid helps to stimulate natural collagen production. Even when the biodegradable filler gel disintegrates into the surrounding tissues, new collagen fibres are already set in place. Therefore, the skin remains firm for a longer time. The hyaluronic acid gel in this filler is derived via biofermentation and is processed using 3D Hyaluronic Acid Matrix Technology. The resulting gel is cross-linked, which allows it to withstand premature degradation upon injection. Following treatment, the skin appears plumper, smoother, and healthier.
HOW TO INJECT IT?
Receiving Surgiderm injections is a medical procedure, and treatments must adhere to standard aseptic guidelines. Injections can only be performed by a certified medical practitioner with experience and skills in aesthetic treatments. Just like any other medical procedures, an initial consultation is necessary to obtain the patient’s medical history. It is also prudent to discuss the patient’s expectation and desired treatment outcomes. Once doctor and patient are both satisfied with treatment goals, you may proceed with the treatment.
As part of aseptic procedure, ensure that the filler’s sterile packaging is still intact, and disinfect the proposed treatment area prior to injection so as to reduce the risk of infection. The depth of injection varies according to the product used and the degree of correction needed. Administer Surgiderm 24XP via mid-dermis injections, and Surgiderm 30XP using deep-dermis injections. Some appropriate injection techniques include serial puncture, fanning, linear threading, and cross hatching methods.
After injection, gently massage the treated areas to ensure good gel distribution. Advise your patients to keep the treated sites clean and without makeup for at least 12 hours after injections. Patients should also avoid harsh temperatures, like those experienced through cold rooms, direct sunlight, and saunas, for the first 2 weeks after treatment. Refer to the package insert for more direction.
HOW LONG DOES THIS FILLER LAST?
Both of these fillers last for, on average, about nine months to a year. As hyaluronic acid is bioresorbable, the filler is gradually broken down by the body over time and is absorbed by the surrounding tissues. Patients can opt for annual maintenance injections to prolong their glowing complexion. The duration of effects varies by person, based on factors like the patients’ age and lifestyle, and the severity of the skin correction.
IS THIS PRODUCT SAFE?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is involved in cell hydration. The synthetic hyaluronic acid that makes up the Surgiderm range is a great replacement for the depleting stores in the skin, and provides great hydrating and volumising effects in the skin. The hyaluronic acid is sourced biotechnologically from a process of bacterial fermentation, and is then purified into a non-pyrogenic, sterile gel. As a result, patients can safely and confidently use this product with very little risk of immunogenic reactions. However, there some contraindications, including:
- Cases where patients are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- Cases where patients are hypersensitive/allergic to hyaluronic acid-based products;
- Cases where patients are hypersensitive/allergic to gram positive bacteria;
- Cases where patients have a tendency of developing hypertrophic scarring;
- Cases where patients are experiencing skin inflammations or infections on proposed area of treatment (e.g. cold sores, hives, acne);
- Cases where patients are still recovering from previous dermal treatments (e.g. dermabrasion, deep chemical peels).
Refer to package insert for more contraindications.

WHAT IS IT MADE OF?
Surgiderm is a brand of cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal fillers processed using 3D Hyaluronic Acid Matrix Technology. The hyaluronic acid molecules are extracted and purified from a strictly-regulated process of bacterial fermentation, and are then cross-linked tightly and uniformly. The resulting gel is very durable and can resist premature degradation.
