What is Synvisc One? Side Effects & Dosage

Published on: Oct 17, 2018

What is Synvisc One?

If you buy Synvisc One, also known as Hylan G-F 20, you will receive a single-use intra-articular injection made from hyaluronan. Synvisc One is an effective treatment to help relieve pain and delay surgery in patients living with osteoarthritis of the knee. This injection works by implanting a fluid that is similar to synovial fluid, which is the fluid in the joint that lubricates and absorbs shock. When there is not enough of this fluid in the joints, it can lead to pain and limited mobility. Hyaluronan, the key active ingredient in Synvisc One, is also naturally present in the fluid of the joints and helps return functionality and reduce pain once the patient is treated with Synvisc One. When patients are treated with Synvisc One, they can expect relief from osteoarthritic pain for up to six months.

Side effects of Synvisc One

While treatment with Synvisc One is very safe and effective, there are some common mild side effects that may occur. Approximately 1 in 14 patients experience pain or swelling after injection of Synvisc One into the knee, and of those patients, approximately 1 in 3 will need to have the fluid removed. However, most side effects experienced are mild and will resolve themselves within days without intervention.

Common side effects:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Headache
  • Joint swelling
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Back pain
  • Pain, stiffness, and redness at injection site
  • Skin rash
  • Itching
  • Facial flushing or swelling

To reduce chances of an adverse reaction, patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Synvisc One, have a skin disease or infection near the injection site, or have an infected or severely swollen joint, should not receive treatment with Synvisc One.

Synvisc One dosage

Synvisc One comes in a 6ml single injectable containing 48mg of hylan. The elastoviscous fluid also contains disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen, phosphate hydrate, and water. The recommended dose is typically one single injection, though this may vary depending on the patient, including factors such as body weight, existing medical conditions, and other medications they may be taking. Some patients may require more than one treatment injection, and Synvisc One is only a temporary pain relief treatment and not a permanent solution, though patients can receive repeated treatment if it is effective. Most patients begin to experience pain relief beginning one month after the injection of Synvisc One.
