What is the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Feb 6, 2018

What is Botox?

When you buy Botox (BTX), also known as onabotulinumtoxinA (botulinum toxin type A), it is an injectable medication produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. In large amounts, this substance may cause botulism, a potentially fatal ailment characterised by muscle paralysis. However, in minute, diluted doses (such as those present in Botox injections), botulinum toxin type A has therapeutic abilities in the treatment of muscular disorders.

Botox acts as a muscle relaxant by temporarily paralysing the area into which it is injected. This is due to its inhibition of the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for muscular activation. As such, it is an excellent treatment for disorders that involve uncontrolled or unwanted muscular movement, including hyperhidrosis, incontinence, cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, strabismus, and focal spasticity.

For this reason, BTX is also extremely effective as a cosmetic procedure. When injected into the facial muscles, it causes relaxation, temporarily improving the look of glabellar lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. The cosmetic effects of Botox may last for up to 4 months.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, cosmetic fillers, or soft tissue fillers, are used to temporarily restore lost facial volume and diminish facial lines and wrinkles. Specifically, they may be used for the correction of moderate to severe skin folds and wrinkles, the augmentation of the lips, the restoration of volume lost to the ageing process or disease, and the correction of facial structure.

Treatments of this sort are generally crafted using hyaluronic acid, a compound found naturally in the skin, tissues, and joints. This unique compound binds to water molecules within the skin, creating a naturally plumping and hydrating effect.

Please note that the duration of cosmetic fillers will depend on the area to be treated, the patient’s skin type and age, and the correct placement of the filler. Some patients may require multiple treatment sessions to achieve their desired results.

What’s the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

In short, both dermal fillers and Botox may be used to reduce the visible signs of ageing. However, BTX achieves this through the temporary paralysis of the facial muscles, while injectable fillers work to volumise the skin from within.

When choosing between these 2 forms of treatment, consider the type of wrinkles to be treated. Botox is more effective for reducing dynamic wrinkles, which are seen when the face is in motion. Cosmetic fillers, on the other hand, are best for static wrinkles, which are seen when the face is relaxed. Understanding these distinctions is of the utmost importance in the quest for younger-looking, revitalised skin.
