How to Get Rid of Wrinkles Around the Mouth

May 4, 2018

Why do wrinkles appear around the mouth?

Skin, the largest organ in the human body, is composed of numerous components, including collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, that work together diligently to ensure optimal dermal health and functionality. More often than not, skin is the first to display premature aging signs like noticeable creases and depressions. These symptoms of aging occur when biological ageing is exacerbated by external agents like smoking, excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure and harsh weathers that contribute skin oxidising free radicals. In turn, bodily maintenance systems lose their normal regenerative capacities and skin injuries get repaired at a much slower rate. As a result, skin depressions and lines appear on areas that are extremely expressive, such as around the mouth. Fine lines around the mouth are also known as perioral wrinkles. These wrinkles form when the lips deflate, and lip borders become undefined. The term “smoker’s lines” is sometimes used interchangeably with perioral wrinkles, as the repetitive motion of lip puckering during smoking can result in those wrinkles.

If perioral wrinkles are left untreated, it can age a person quite drastically and mar the person’s appearance and self-esteem. The presence of wrinkles around the mouth may also cause embarrassing aesthetic issues, such as having lipstick bleed into the lines after it is applied. So, patients can opt for cosmetic procedures like chemical peels, dermabrasions, and dermal fillers to effectively remove older cells and improve healthy cell growth. A popular dermal filler material is undoubtedly hyaluronic acid, as it is found naturally in the lips as well. Once injected, the filler will immediately redefine vermilion border and subsequently erase wrinkles around the mouth. Some dermal filler brands indicated for correcting perioral lines include Belotero® Soft and Restylane® Silk.
