What is the Difference Between Restylane vs Botox?

Restylane and Botox are 2 popular injectable anti-ageing injectables. They both provide smoothing of the skin and eliminate deep wrinkles from the complexion. However, the similarities stop there. Each product is made of unique ingredients that work to target specific types of wrinkles.
Restylane Active ingredients
Restylane is a line of highly regarded dermal fillers that deliver a sterile, viscoelastic and bioresorbable hyaluronic-based gel into the dermis. Each formulation works to target varying concerns. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body but depletes with time and age. The active ingredient in Restylane fillers is extracted from biofermentation of Streptococcus bacteria and further enhanced to create cross-linked Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA).
Benefits of Restylane and Botox
The main benefit of hyaluronic acid is its capacity to fill the dermal extracellular matrix with moisture. Its humectant properties allow it to attract and retain moisture.
Botox contains botulinum toxin derived from Clostridium botulinum and acts on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Instead of targeting soft tissues, it blocks the cholinergic reaction to prevent muscle contractions. This helps to smooth the skin where dynamic wrinkles would normally appear.
What are these injectables used for?
Restylane works to correct moderate to severe wrinkles in in the face such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and even lip enhancement. The gel is injected intradermally into soft tissues of the face or the submucosa of the lips. The result can last up to 6 months or more, depending on the filler used.
On the other hand, Botox targets specific areas that corresponds with muscle contractions via intramuscular injection. These areas include prominent glabellar lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet lines at the corner of the eyes. The effect lasts between 4–6 months and can be prolonged with maintenance treatments.
Often, doctors may use these treatments together for deeper lines.
